About As
As on google maps
From the official As town hall website: www.mestoas.cz The town of As is located at the edge of the Czech Republic in a picturesque region at the borders of Bohemia, Bavaria and Saxony. This unique location gives As the opportunity to become a modern centre of cross-border communication in the new Europe. Castle The Castle was built in the 1st half of the 16th century as one of the residents for the House of Zedtwitz on top of the hill Mikulas nearby the St. Nicholas Church. In the beginning of the 18th century the House of Zedtwitz was granted a special female fief which was confirmed by Emperor Charles VI. in 1724. The castle got burnt out in 1814 and wasn't repaired again. After 1822 a classicist building was built there which nowadays houses a museum. Museum The Museum was founded in 1892. In the 1960s it relocated to the building on top of the hill Mikulas where originally a castle of the House of Zedtwitz used to stand. After extensive building reconstructions in the second half of the 1980s, a local history exhibition and an exhibition of the local textile industry were opened here. Salva Guardia A stone relief with the Emperor's emblem and coats-of-arms made on the basis of privileges granted to Zedtwitz in a feudal latter of 1724. The emblem symbolizes the fact that the town was relieved of obligatory accommodation for armies and possible looting. The relief was originally placed in the arch of the castle gate. After a fire it was taken down by the new owner and in 1892 it was built into a corner pillar of the garden of the present day museum. St. Nicholas' Church A Roman Catholic Church built near to the place of an original late Baroque church from 1780. The Church was built by K. Wiedemann, a builder from Frantiskovy Lazne during the years of 1867 - 1871 as a single navy building with a transept and a 48-metre-high western tower. In the northern wall there is a memorial plaque set in to commemorate the original building. Town Hall A baroque building from 1733 built as an administrative centre of the Zedtwitz estate, destroyed by fire in 1814, rebuilt again in 1815 - 1816 according to the original designs by Angelus Pfeffer, the builder of a New Town Hall in Cheb. In 1885 the building was raised and acquired another floor whilst it was rebuilt in a Pseudo Renaissance style. After 1945 a museum and a library was situated here. In 2003 the building was repaired and its original use was regained. Memorial to J. W. Goethe J. W. Goethe often stopped in As on his journey to Bohemia during the years 1806 - 1823. His stops were first commemorated with a plague placed on the Posta Hotel in the square. In 1932 a memorial with a fountain were unveiled in the square. The statue was made by J. Watzal. Reliefs on the pedestal depict scenes from Goethe's works. The years when Goethe stopped off in As are listed on the northern side of the pedestal.
